Asia now commands 38% of the global flexible packaging market, expanding at 5.4% annually through 2026. Chinese exporters shipped $99 billion in paper-based packaging last year – 15% of global trade. Automated facilities in industrial hubs like Dongguan achieve significant cost advantages, with firms such as Guangdong Kangdi Packaging deploying digital printing and AI logistics to cut custom order expenses by up to 60%.
Western producers face mounting pressures. The EU's Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), demanding 15% waste reduction by 2040, is accelerating the phase-out of non-recyclable aluminium laminates. Simultaneously, US manufacturers reduced July raw material purchases after tariff-related stockpiling, pushing North America's supply chain capacity index to -0.33 – indicating severe underutilisation. Recent plant closures, including Graphic Packaging's Ohio mill, exacerbate shortages.

Industry analysts project tariffs may slow global packaging growth by 0.5% this decade. Yet Asia's manufacturing scale remains irreplaceable for now, providing vital elasticity in an increasingly fragmented trading landscape.
